Early Withering of Enlarged Ovules in Pollinated Fruits of Bananas (Musa spp.) Suggest Abortion after Fertilization

چکیده

Sterility in edible bananas is as a result of long history anthropogenic-driven selection for sterile genotypes, since seed not desirable fruit pulp human consumption. However, this poses challenge to conventional genetic improvement by slowing breeding pipelines. In study, we investigated whether pollen tubes reach all parts the ovary, position fertilized ovule development fruits, and potential set selected banana genotypes. We four cultivars East African Highland Cooking (EAHBs), Matooke hybrid ‘222K-1’, improved diploid ‘2905’, wild ‘Zebrina (G.F.)’ ‘Calcutta 4’. There was evidence distal, mid proximal sections fruit, irrespective hand genotype. Fertilization, indicated an increase size, happened along entire length but complete biased at distal end some were differences fertilization rates between hands, with hands having more ovules higher rates. Ovule happens vast majority aborts, especially ovary. are generally much lower than available ovules.

Genetic Diversity in Bananas and Plantains (Musa spp.)

Bananas and plantains belong to the family Musaceae and are cultivated throughout the humid tropics and sub-tropics. This crop is perennial with a faster relative growth rate compared to other fruit crops, while producing fruit all year round. Because of their nutritional value, bananas and plantains are considered the fourth most important crop worldwide after rice, wheat and corn. In many cou...

Expressed Centromere Specific Histone 3 (CENH3) Variants in Cultivated Triploid and Wild Diploid Bananas (Musa spp.)

Centromeres are specified by a centromere specific histone 3 (CENH3) protein, which exists in a complex environment, interacting with conserved proteins and rapidly evolving satellite DNA sequences. The interactions may become more challenging if multiple CENH3 versions are introduced into the zygote as this can affect post-zygotic mitosis and ultimately sexual reproduction. Here, we characteri...

Fructans and other water soluble carbohydrates in vegetative organs and fruits of different Musa spp. accessions

The water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) glucose, fructose, and sucrose are well-known to the great public, but fructans represent another type of WSC that deserves more attention given their prebiotic and immunomodulatory properties in the food context. Although the occurrence of inulin-type fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) was proposed in the fruit of some banana accessions, little or no informatio...
